Who We Are
New Jersey is considered a leader in the field of prevention in part because of the efforts of the New Jersey Coalition for Prevention of Developmental Disabilities. Created in 1985, the goals of the Coalition are:
- To inspire and mobilize government, agencies, communities, families and individuals in a strong statewide prevention effort;
- To foster cooperation among health/mental health, education and human service systems in prevention education and advocacy;
- To identify needs and develop resources; and to advocate for relevant programs, services and legislation
The Coalition is a special project of The Arc of New Jersey funded by the New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities Office for Prevention of Developmental Disabilities.
Our Efforts
The NJ Coalition for Prevention is engaged in many prevention initiatives to educate, advocate, identify needs, and develop resources for preventable issues that can cause developmental disabilities. These efforts include:
- Prevention activities on the local level, including Pregnant Pause (an initiative for preventing FASD)
- A Resource Center of circulating materials that includes videos, articles, journals, newsletters and books
- A Speaker's Bureau of FREE presentations on a number of topics, including Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD); Overview of Intellectual and related Developmental Disabilities; Childhood Injury Prevention (Am I a Safe Kid?); Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention and other critical issues
- Presentations, workshops, educational seminars and conferences across the state
